Breaking Rod

CL 3 Magic Rod • Weak Abjuration
Cost: 4,500 gp
Weight: 5 lbs.

This rod is a solid metal bar, thick in the hand at over 2 inches diameter, that has pointy bits on each end, like a meat tenderizer. It has no protrusions, etchings, or decorations on the sides, simply a smooth haft, perfectly even. The metal appears blackened, like cast iron, and the rod hums with a silent power.

Wielders of this rod can utter a command word as a standard action to cast a Shatter spell, using up one charge from the rod.

When the rod is activated, it creates a loud, ringing noise that breaks brittle, non-magical objects; Sunders a single solid, non-magical object; or damages a nearby creature.

Used as an area effect, Shatter is harmless to creatures but destroys non-magical objects of crystal, glass, ceramic, or porcelain, such as glasses, goblets, cups, plates, mirrors, etc. All such unattended objects within a 15-foot diameter (3x3 square) area are smashed into dozens of pieces by the spell. At least one square of the affected area must fall within 30 feet of the wielder's space. Objects weighing more than 1 pound per caster level of the rod are not affected, but all other objects of the appropriate composition are shattered, gaining the Broken condition.

Alternatively, the wielder can target the breaking rod at a single solid object, regardless of composition, weighing up to 10 pounds per caster level of the rod, even if it is in the possession of a creature. For example, if used against a weapon held in a foe's hand, it inflicts 1 point of siege damage per casting (reducing durability by 1), as if you had successfully sundered it. Against unattended objects this automatically succeeds. Against objects borne by creatures, they may make a FORT saving throw with a DC based on the caster level of the rod to negate the effect.

Finally, the wielder may directly target an enemy creature within 30 feet of their space, inflicting an amount of Sonic (energy, common) damage based on the caster level of the rod (see table below), with a FORT saving throw (DC based on caster level of the rod) for half damage.

If a targeted creature has spell resistance, the wielder of the rod must first make a Bailiwick skill check against the target's Maneuver Defense. If they equal or exceed this number, the spell is resolved against the target as normal. If the check fails, the spell is cast from the rod (using up a charge) but has no effect on the target creature.

You can purchase this rod at a higher creator level than the minimum required to cast the spell. Doing so increases the potency of the spell as described above, but also increases the cost, as follows:
