A feat is a minor power or ability that can be used to exactly customize the way each character works. Some feats are nearly universally useful, such as Endurance. Others boost more specific aspects of a character. If your character expects to be in a lot of fights using a sword, then the Weapon Focus feat might be something you'd be interested in.

There are LOTS of Feats. There is a great deal of 'depth' in all these hundreds of little tiny powers and abilities, and it can seem pretty overwhelming. Do not worry about it too much! A very carefully tailored build, with intricate 'stacks' of feats that are all synergistic and 'add up' together, can be huge fun, but it's not strictly required.

Yes, careful attention to Feats can make your character a lot more powerful, but if you want to just dive in and start playing, pick something basic like Dodge, Endurance, or Weapon Focus and start rolling dice! There's mechanisms for changing your mind later, so don't stress about it too much.

Now, that said.... Careful study of the feats can unlock some truly spectacular modes of play. So, like most things, effort is rewarded! What amazing and fun things can YOU work out to do?

NOTE: Any feat which has a superscript "1" behind the name 'unlocks' other feats. It may be a prerequisite, or it may simply 'add on' to the effects of another feat. Feats which do not have such a superscript are 'singletons' or stand-alone feats. Unlock feats are important to consider at low levels, because many desirable higher-level feats have such unlock feats as requirements, and finding a high level awesome feat you want may require a lot of effort to get if you have to use the re-training rules to rebuild your feats.
