Description

This powerful inscription harms those who enter, pass, or open the warded area or object. A Glyph of Warding can guard a bridge or passage, ward a portal, trap a chest or box, and so on.
You set all of the conditions of the ward. Typically, any creature entering the warded area or opening/touching/using the warded object without speaking a password (which you set when casting the spell) is subject to the magic it stores. If you choose to make a large Glyph, you must choose which single square is the one which triggers the effect, which then damages all creatures in the entire area.
Glyphs respond to invisible creatures normally but are not triggered by those who travel past them ethereally. Multiple glyphs cannot be cast on the same large area, such as attempting to stack a dozen Glyphs in a hallway. However, if a cabinet has three different drawers, each can be separately warded, and each is only triggered when its specific drawer is used/touched/opened. The GM adjudicates all unusual activations, and are encouraged to be skeptical.
When casting the spell, you weave a tracery of faintly glowing lines around the warding sigil. A glyph can be placed to conform to any shape up to the limitations of your total square footage. When the spell is completed, the glyph and tracery fade and conform to the surfaces involved, to become nearly invisible. If the caster wishes the Glyph to be secret, they may make a Stealth skill or Sleight of Hand skill roll at the time of casting, and the result of this roll is the target DC for Perception checks and Disable Device checks to affect the Glyph. If the caster chooses not to include a Stealth or Sleight of Hand check with their casting, the Perception DC is an Easy DC based on the caster's character level, but the Disable Device DC is a Challenging DC based on the caster's character level.
If there is no clear caster, then the DC for both Perception and Disable Device is a Challenging DC based on the CR of the location, or based on the campaign level.
Magical effects cannot fool a glyph, nor can non-magical disguises and the like. If you touch or enter the warded area, either you know the password, or you do not.
Depending on the version selected, a glyph can have various effects.
Blast Glyph: A Blast Glyph deals (Circle 2 damage): 1d6 points of damage per character level (max 6d6 at character level 6) of damage to the intruder, to all within 5 feet of him or her, or to all creatures in the warded area when the Glyph is triggered. This damage is acid (energy, common), cold (energy, common), fire (energy, common), electricity (energy, common), or sonic (energy, common) (caster's choice, made at time of casting). Each creature affected can attempt a save (defined above) to take half damage. Spell Resistance (SR) applies against this effect.

Burn Glyph: A Burn Glyph deals (Circle 1 damage): 1d6 points of damage per character level (max 4d6 at character level 4) of damage to the intruder, to all within 5 feet of him or her, or to all creatures in the warded area when the Glyph is triggered. In addition, all affected creatures gain the Burned condtion inflicting the same type of damage as the Glyph, regardless of whether the save is made or not, and the specific object warded (if an object was the focus of the Glyph) suffers a point of Siege Damage automatically. This is often used to protect and destroy a secret message, for example.

Trap Glyph: A Trap Glyph deals (Circle 1 damage): 1d6 points of damage per character level (max 4d6 at character level 4) of damage to the intruder, to all within 5 feet of him or her, or to all creatures in the warded area when the Glyph is triggered. In addition, a Trap Glyph inflicts the Entangled condition to all affected creatures, with a successful save reducing the condition to Hindered. If the caster level of the Glyph is 20 or higher, the condition is improved to Entrapped, with a save reducing it to Entangled.
