Purpose of this chart

Okay, let's talk, Game Master to Game Master.

We've all been there. You have a carefully prepared encounter all cooked up and ready to go for your table of players...and they make a hard right turn on you.

Instead of stepping into your lovingly prepared ballroom scene that will soon devolve into horrible, bloody chaos, they decide inexplicably to head back out to the Orc village they cleared out three levels ago and check out that mysterious cave they never got around to.

(sigh) Players.

Now, you HAVE the cave roughed out in your notes, except that the characters are now three levels tougher than the highest level orc that ever lived. Sure, you could swap out some Ogres or something, but that's going to seem weird. If you have write access to the game rules, you could go into a Blueprint and set some orcs to the proper CR, takes just a second. But what if you don't want to make the players wait while you scramble around and log in and stuff, or, horror of horrors, you don't have login access at the table?

Fear not! This is exactly what Patterns were designed for!

You pop open the Patterns page and slap a hasty 'Agile Creature' pattern on the orcs. Most of the Patterns are designed to run just like that, you simply do some quick math in your notes, and run your game in triumph!

But suppose you choose a Pattern that grants a new power or ability, such as 'Draconic Creature'? If you don't have convenient access to a login at the table, how do you set the damage of this power?

That's what this table is for.

In all cases, it's best and most seamless to build a Pattern into a monster using the Blueprints. But for those inevitable times you're scrambling a bit behind the screen to catch up with your player's whimsy's, this chart can save your bacon!

Using the Chart

This is simplicity itself. Look in the pattern which grants a new power. It should state what damage class it does, such as 'Alpha' or 'Claw'. Find the ADJUSTED CR of your new monster, and voila, that's the properly scaled damage for that power. Note that you can readily adjust the 'power' of a Patterned Monster by moving up or down the chart by one CR level. We recommend you never move up or down more than one level this way.

The save DC's (if any) for the new power will be the same as the save DC's for the base creature's powers, with any modifiers that Pattern grants. If you somehow manage to find a monster that has no save DC's defined (perhaps because it has no save-allowing powers at all before you applied the Pattern), you can look up the appropriate save DC on the handy Save DC chart. In all cases, the 'Average' save DC for the adjusted CR should be used if there's no DC already listed. Of course, the GM may move the save difficulty up or down on the chart, but be careful!

Example: Suppose you take a CR7 Orc Battle-Rager and want to add the Fiendish Creature (+1 CR) and Draconic Creature (+2 CR) patterns to it. The brand-new Fiendish Draconic Battle Ragers have a new Battle Howl ability which does Special Standard Damage based on their adjusted CR of 10. Checking the chart below, you see that their Battle Howl does 2d8+10 points of Sonic damage. And of course, the Battle Rager doesn't have a Save DC listed in its blueprint (because what use would an example be if it didn't show everything), so checking the Save DC chart linked above and choosing an Average Save for CR 10 we find a DC of 23. Voila, you're ready to go!

Good luck!
