Rod of High Noon

CL 5 Magic Rod • Weak Evocation
Cost: 11,250 gp
Weight: 4 lbs.

A rod of high noon is a dull grey shaft of metal, approximately two and a half inches in diameter that is perfectly cylindrical until you reach the top of the rod, where it expands outward in a bowl-like shape, with a flat, translucent top. The bowl shape is perhaps four inches in diameter. The flat top is like a small crystal window, and looking inside reveals the metal insides of the bowl-shape, and at the bottom of the bowl, a mysterious knob of the same crystal material protrudes. Along the body of the rod, the grey metal has a carved section with a very fine cross-hatching pattern, almost like sandpaper, that makes the rod quite easy to grip. Also on the body, just below the bowl-shaped protuberance, is a small circular indentation inset into the metal, and inside this indentation is a smooth convex mass. It's sized perfectly for a thumb to press down upon it, but despite this, pressing it does nothing.

Wielders of this rod can utter a command word as a standard action to cast an Daylight spell, using up one charge from the rod.

Upon activation, the wielder touches the rod to an object they can reach, causing the object to shed bright light in a 60-foot radius. This illumination increases the light level for an additional 60 feet by one step (darkness becomes dim light, dim light becomes bright light). Creatures that take penalties in bright light take them while within the 60-foot radius of this magical light. Despite its name, this spell is not the equivalent of daylight for the purposes of creatures that are damaged or destroyed by such light.

If Daylight is cast on a small object that is then placed inside or under a light-proof covering, the spell's effects are blocked until the covering is removed.

If Daylight is cast into an area of magical darkness (or vice versa), both are temporarily negated, so that the otherwise prevailing light conditions exist in the overlapping areas of effect.

Alternatively, when casting the spell, the wielder may make a melee touch attack against a creature within reach. Casting Daylight and using it to attack a creature inflicts an amount of light (energy, uncommon) damage based on the creator level of the rod, and inflicts Blind to all sight-based senses on the target creature. Attacking with this spell in this way ends the spell immediately, hit or miss. There is no saving throw against this damage, but after being touched, the target creature is allowed a Fortitude saving throw versus a DC based on the creator level of the rod to reduce the Blind condition to Dazzled. This use of the spell is a spectacular effect, as the creature's eyes or other visual organs light up from the inside like lamps.

If a targeted creature has spell resistance, the wielder of the rod must first make a Bailiwick skill check against the target's Maneuver Defense. If they equal or exceed this number, the spell is resolved against the target as normal. If the check fails, the spell is cast from the rod (using up a charge) but has no effect on the target creature.

You can purchase this rod at a higher creator level than the minimum required to cast the spell. Doing so increases the potency of the spell as described above, but also increases the cost, as follows:
