Greater Warding Rod

CL 7 Magic Rod • Weak Abjuration
Cost: 22,500 gp
Weight: 5.0 lbs.

This rod appears to have been made from an heater shield that has been tightly rolled into itself until it resembles the shape of a rod. It's hard to say how such a thing was accomplished, or why a simpler method of making this rod couldn't have been used. In any case, the rod is fatter of diameter than most other rods, measuring in at nearly 3-inches' diameter. The outside surface of the rod contains the somewhat smashed remains of heraldry that might once have adorned the shield, though only a small portion of this heraldry can be seen. The entire rod appears to be made from Argent.

Wielders of this rod can utter a command word as a standard action to cast a Resist Uncommon Energy spell, using up one charge from the rod.

When the rod is activated, the wielder can grant Energy Resistance (ER) versus one type of Uncommon (Desiccation,  Fictive,  Force,  Light,  Nascent,  Necrotic,  Negative,  Positive,  Psychic,  Radiant,  Scouring,  Stilling) energy damage type to either themselves, or one ally within their reach. This damage type is chosen at the time that the rod is activated, and once selected, cannot be changed unless a new casting of the rod's spell effect is performed.

The subject gains ER equal to 3 + the creator level of the rod against the energy type chosen, meaning that each time the creature is subjected to such damage (whether from a natural or magical source), that damage is reduced by this amount before being applied to the creature's hit points. The spell protects the recipient's equipment as well, although it is not effective against siege damage, even if it is elemental in nature.

The spell effect provided by a greater warding rod absorbs only damage. The subject could still suffer unfortunate side effects, and is vulnerable to environmental hazards.

If a targeted creature has spell resistance, the wielder of the rod must first make a Bailiwick skill check against the target's Maneuver Defense. If they equal or exceed this number, the spell is resolved against the target as normal. If the check fails, the spell is cast from the rod (using up a charge) but has no effect on the target creature.

This spell effect lays and Arcane Charge on the spell's target. If the target already has an arcane charge present, they must choose whether to accept the new spell effect (dismissing the existing one) or not (keeping their existing one). Only one arcane charge can ever be present on a target at a time.

You can purchase this rod at a higher creator level than the minimum required to cast the spell. Doing so increases the potency of the spell as described above, but also increases the cost, as follows:
