Hellwalker's Rod

Hellwalker's Rod

CL 7 Magic Rod • Weak Abjuration
Cost: 22,500 gp
Weight: 4.0 lbs.

A hellwalker's rod is made from an odd dweomermetal that comes from one of the 'heavenly' planes of existence. While this metal doesn't hold an edge when forged, and it isn't easily worked into complex shapes, it can easily be formed into simple shapes. The metal doesn't seem to have many useful properties, except that it always remains at a temperature of 68° Fahrenheit regardless of the environmental temperatures around it, making it quite comfortable to hold.

Wielders of this rod can utter a command word as a standard action to cast a Planar Adaptation spell, using up one charge from the rod.

When the rod is activated, it emanates a comforting pressure on the wielder or an ally within the wielder's reach, not unlike a magical hug, attempting to grant the target the effects of a Planar Adaptation spell.

However, since the rod only 'borrows' its power from divine sources, the beings involved levy additional requirements upon the wielder of the rod. Rather than acting automatically to lend its effects, the wielder of the rod must first roll a Bailiwick skill check against a Hard DC for the Challenge Rating (CR) of the plane of existence that the rod is meant to provide protection against.

This can be a difficult check, but purchasing a more powerful rod will add a scaling bonus to this check, as follows: higher level versions of the Hellwalker's Rod add a circumstance bonus to your bailiwick skill check, specifically for casting the Planar Adaptation spell, equal to 3 + the creator level of the rod divided by 7 (dropping fractions). Thus, at creator levels 1 through 6, the bonus is +3, at levels 7 through 13 the bonus is +4, at levels 14 through 20 it is +5, at levels 21 through 27 it is +6, at levels 28 through 34 it is +7, and at creator level 35 it is +8. If this check is failed, even by one, the charge is expended and there is no effect, although you can certainly try again with a new standard action.

Users of this rod are not required to make a Use Magic Device check, even if they do not have access to this spell via their character class. This check is replaced by the bailiwick skill check described above (though it is required by any user of the rod, not just those who would normally be forced to make the Use Magic Device check).

If the check is successful, the target gains immunity to the harmful environmental effects of a particular plane of existence, including such hazards as toxicity, extreme temperatures, and lack of air. This spell provides no resistance against monster damage, nor does it protect against damage caused by a non-environmental source (such as traps). This spell does not work on your native plane. This immunity persists until the target's next full-night's rest.

If a target creature has spell resistance, the wielder of the rod must first make a Bailiwick skill check against the target's Maneuver Defense. If they equal or exceed this number, the spell is resolved against the target as normal. If the check fails, the spell is cast from the rod (using up a charge) but has no effect on the target creature.

This spell effect lays a Divine Charge on the spell's target. If the target already has a divine charge present, they must choose whether to accept the new spell effect (dismissing the existing one) or not (keeping their existing one). Only one divine charge can ever be present on a target at a time.

You can purchase this rod at a higher creator level than the minimum required to cast the spell. Doing so increases the potency of the spell as described above, but also increases the cost, as follows:
