??? to -34,000 Reign of the God Beasts God beasts rule Reist. Unlike the many legendary beasts that still roam the lands, these were ascended beings. Humanoid towns and villages would worship these God Beasts, who would protect them from other God Beasts, dragons, and other threats. The humanoids would worship them, and provide offerings, tithes, and sacrifices to appease them. So things were for most of history.
-34,000 to -26,000 Rise of the First Gods A smattering of humanoid gods ascended to apotheosis, accumulating enough power and worshipers to defeat a few of the god beasts. These new gods were able to carve territory away from the God Beasts, founding the first humanoid cities, and permitting commerce and civilization to take its first tottering steps.
-26,000 Arrival of the Predecessors The Predecessors are exiled to Reist. The Predecessors are an apparently humanoid race of beings from some other world. They are highly advanced in both technology and magic.
-26,000 to -24,000 The Great Machines The Predecessors create their great flying cities, and build their powerful Warworks
-24,000 to -4,000 Reign of the Predecessors The Predecessors slay the last of the God Beasts and all of the humanoid gods. They casually conquer most of Reist, with the primary exception of Fane. Civilization enters a golden age, ruled benevolently by the Predecessors. While the Predecessors do not share their technology, they police and protect the people, providing a safe environment for the native cultures to take root, for commerce and technology to advance, and for civilization, in general, to flourish.
-4,000 The Betrayal The Oradim, the fearsome lords of Fane, ruthlessly attack the Predecessors, striking them without honor by targeting their civilian populations, disrupting supply lines, and waging guerrilla warfare upon them. The golden age ends, as the collective civilized humanoid races are subjected to being collateral damage in a war between vastly powerful forces.
-2,500 Tenoch Necalli During this great war, the Tenoch Necalli appear for the first time. This cabal of sentient monster races attempts to opportunistically conquer some of the humanoid cities for themselves. Their motives for doing so are unclear.
-2,000 Silath Tyr A new race of people arrive on Reist, called the Silath Tyr. While they share the appearance of Elves, they are not. They bring with them many new technologies and magic, which are different from those of the Predecessors and the Oradim. They establish a huge city in Faltherian.
0 to 2,448 The Shattering The world of Reist collapses into cataclysm. The Predecessors, the Oradim, and the Silath Tyr are all destroyed. No records of how this occurred (or why) remain. Only the obvious signs of a massive calamity linger, even to this day.

Northern Lights appear across the land, regardless of climate, temperature, or geography. These lights drive everyone into a state of aggressive madness. They show up for a few days, here and there, through the centuries following the Shattering. None have occurred in the last thousand years.

Plagues, famine, drought, floods, and other disasters occur, as the entire planet reels from the mysterious destructive forces that were unleashed.

During this time, the Tenoch Necalli rise into great power, conquering much of the region around the Northern Sea. Their victims are sacrificed to their gods, and their gods become quite powerful.

2,447 to 3,102 The New Gods New gods arise among the civilized races, driving back the Tenoch Necalli. Civilizations begin to rebuild, and new cities are established. Empires form, and humanoids once again create a beachhead of civilization for themselves.
3,053 to 3,110 Empire of the Spear Led by the Grinning God, the Empire of the Spear is founded, and expands into the western regions of the Silath Tyr. Precipice, Nail, Gibbet, and Grist are all founded.
3,103 God-Slayer The Grinning God strips the Tenoch Necalli god Orryx of his deific mantle, rendering him mortal and unascended, then kills him.
3,151 Skellig Spear Alden captains discover the Skellig Spear, a massive current in the Northern Sea, but are unable to cross it. The Alden government offers a reward of 50,000 gold coins to any captain who is able to cross it and return with proof of the deed.
3,207 Kul'Morran The Ottovar dwarves expand into the Brun'Holfen Mountains, and establish the keep of Kul'Morran
3,222 Ottovar/Fontaigne Alliance Ottovar and Fontaigne establish an alliance, predicated on trade, to support each other in their expansion into the Silath Tyr region.
3,224 Weatherly and Prims Fontaigne attempts to establish embassies and several new settlements in the Silath Tyr region, but within a year of their arrival, the citizens of the two largest cities, Weatherly and Prims, vanish without a trace. There is no sign of struggle. It is as though all the men, women, and children just stood up and walked into the jungle, all at once. The ruins of these cities, heavily overtaken by the jungle, still moulder, abandoned.
3,240 to 3,266 War with Alden The Ottovar/Fontaigne alliance wages a war against the Alden Empire, sending their armies against the Alden homeland, but also against its cities and ports in the Northern Sea. The declared reason for this is Alden's use of slave labor, but hostility between these nations has existed for centuries, with fights breaking out constantly over long-disputed borders. The war is disruptive to all sides, but ultimately Fontaigne and Ottovar are forced to withdraw and sue for peace. Alden quickly recovers most of the ports it lost.
3,272 to 3,285 Ottovar Expands Ottovar establishes Kul'Kai and Kul'Allat.
3,316 Slave Mines of Carcassus Alden discovers the island of Carcassus, and begins a massive mining operation there, heavily relying on slave labor.
3,318 to 3,325 Alden Expands Avernus, Paranthis, and Vorthus are established. All three are former native colonies, which have been rebuilt to suit Alden. The captured native people who cannot quickly prove their usefulness to Alden are enslaved and used sent to the mines of Carcassus.
3,329 Crossing the Skellig Captain Larrimore Nouel of Fontaigne discovers the shattered Empyrean Vault across the Skellig Spear, and lives to return and talk about it, claiming the prize from Alden (by this time, it has risen to over a million gold pieces). The tale of the discovery is gossiped about tirelessly, and it creates a kind of gold rush mentality for adventurers and opportunists, who flock to the Silath Tyr region in droves.
3,331 Founding of Lorraine Fontaigne establishes Lorraine and several other colonies, attempting to build supply lines to the Skellig Spear
3,333 Ottovar Breaks Alliance Ottovar severs its alliance with Fontaigne, citing the costly war against Alden, and Fontaigne's expansions into the Silath Tyr region, which Ottovar claims are too close to its own expansions.
3,334 to 3,342 Fontaigne Expands Corvin, Bethnal and Sill are founded.
3,350 Fontaigne vs. Freehaven Fontaigne attempts to conquer Freehaven, but is driven off by the locals
3,356 Alden vs. Freehaven Alden attempts to conquer Freehaven, but is also unsuccessful.
3,358 Alden's Embassy Alden creates an embassy in Freehaven
3,359 Embassy Fire The Alden embassy at Freehaven is destroyed in a fire. Alden blames Fontaigne, escalating tensions.
3,361 Current Year The year in which our campaign begins. All three empires are simmering, but not at (official) war with each other. Each is fully committed to sponsoring the recovery of the artifacts of the Empyrean Vault beyond the Skellig Spear, in hopes that those artifacts will allow them to dominate the other empires, or at least hold them in check.
