Mask of a Thousand Tomes +4

CL 17 Head Slot Item • Moderate Divination
Cost: 65,000 gp
Weight: 10 lbs.
Family: Mask of a Thousand Tomes

A Mask of a Thousand Tomes is a heavy, bulky thing, which can be of varied appearance but almost always incorporates elements of books, scrolls, temples, or libraries in its artistry. Notably, such a face mask has no eye-holes, and while worn, the wearer is Blind to all sight-based senses. Since using this mask requires a Ritual, this is less of an obstacle than would be expected.

You can remove and carry the Mask of a Thousand Tomes on your person without breaking its attunement, although if you leave it back in town, that's a different matter.

So, why would anyone bother with such a wretched and difficult-to-use thing?

Because a Mask of a Thousand Tomes is a magical Library that you can carry with you anywhere you go. Even better, a Mask grants the effects of a full day of research in a single hour-long ritual!

As a bonus ability, if the wearer wishes to make a Monster Lore Check but does not have the proper Knowledge skill, they may instead make a Bailiwick Skill check in place of that skill for their Lore check. Obviously, they must have seen the monster in question recently (typically, this check is done after an encounter with an unknown monster). If they attempt this check with only a description or information from a Survival Skill use, the Bailiwick roll is made at a -5 or larger penalty, as assigned by the GM.

To those who prize knowledge, such Masks are literally worth their weight in diamonds.

A Mask is heavy and cannot be worn in battle, and weaker Masks can't be used very often, but even so, these items are in huge demand, such that even the weakest can only be afforded by adventurers of heroic stature. If you have questions, then a Mask can provide answers!

A Mask of a Thousand Tomes +4 , three times per week, acts as a magical Library when it is used out of combat during an hour long ritual. The wearer must have a quiet, calm, undisturbed place to focus upon the powers of the Mask. At the end of this time, the wearer may make a single Skill Roll, on any topic they desire, with a +6 Circumstance Bonus on the roll. Note that you cannot 'take 20' or 'take 10' on this roll, you must roll the die.

The owner of this magic item must wear it continuously for 24 hours to attune it to their aura, and until that time has passed, it provides no benefits to the wearer.

Creation: Creator (Feat), Bailiwick Check (DC 44 (10 + double CL)), Bright (tier 3) remnant, An item symbolic of the enchantment, 32,500 gp (minus cost of symbolic item).
