Menacing Growl (Su)

Requires: Barbarian 1, Feral Mien
Benefit: Once per round as a free action, you can activate Menacing Growl to augment your next attack with a terrifying growl to intimidate your enemy. If your next attack hits a creature you can perceive within 30 feet of your space (i.e., you can use either a melee or a ranged attack), you inflict an amount of Stilling (energy, uncommon) damage equal to your CHA modifier plus your Barbarian class level, and the creature becomes Humbled until the start of your next turn. There is no saving throw against this effect, but if your attack misses, Menacing Growl has no effect this round. The Stilling damage inflicted by Menacing Growl is bonus damage, meaning it is never multiplied on a critical hit, but it bypasses any defenses against precision damage.
Menacing Growl is considered a fear effect, so Menacing Growl has no effect on creatures that are immune to fear (such as undead).

Progression:

  • 11th Level: Menacing Growl now triggers on the first creature you successfully hit before the end of your current turn, and it is no longer considered a fear effect, meaning it can even affect creatures that are immune to fear effects.
  • 21st Level: Menacing Growl now deals an amount of Stilling (energy, uncommon) damage equal to your barbarian class level times your experience tier, plus your CHA ability score (not modifier). That is, a level 21 barbarian (tier 5), with a Charisma score of 26 would deal 131 points of Stilling damage. In addition, Menacing Growl now inflicts the Slandered condition on the first creature you successfully hit before the end of your current turn (instead of Humbled). The Slandered condition lasts until the start of your next turn.
  • 31st Level: Menacing Growl now inflicts the Disgraced condition (instead of Slandered), and can affect up to two targets you successfully hit before the end of your current turn.
