Rod of the Thrice Scorned

CL 7 Magic Rod • Weak Enchantment
Cost: 22,500 gp
Weight: 4 lbs.

This rod is made in a spiteful, hateful fashion. It is carved from the heartwood of an ancient sourwood, it is bound with the sinews of a rabid dog, the nails are taken from the coffin of a murderer of children, and the endcaps, of black-tarnished silver, are made from coins stolen from a good man's grave.

Wielders of this rod can utter a command word as a standard action to cast a Bestow Curse spell, using up one charge from the rod. For the cost of three charges it can be activated as a swift action instead, and for the cost of five charges, it can be activated as an immediate action even outside the wielder's normal turn.

When the wielder snarls the vicious phrase of the command word, the rod flicks forth to touch a creature in your reach. This does NOT require a touch attack, the dire magic always affecting your victims to some extent. The victim automatically receives the Cursed condition. They are allowed a Willpower saving throw as defined below to lower this to Jinxed. Once the wielder has used this rod on a given creature once, they may not cast it on them again until the victim has taken a Full Night's Rest.

The curse bestowed by this spell cannot be dispelled with a regular Dispel Magic (Sorcerer/Wizard Spell), but it can be removed with Dispel Magic, Greater (Sorcerer/Wizard Spell), or via a Wish, Limited (Sorcerer/Wizard Spell), Miracle (Cleric Spell), Remove Curse (Sorcerer/Wizard Spell), or Wish (Sorcerer/Wizard Spell).

If the targeted creature has spell resistance, the wielder of the rod must first make a Bailiwick skill check against the target's Maneuver Defense. If they equal or exceed this number, the spell is resolved against the target as normal. If the check fails, the spell is cast from the rod (using up a charge) but has no effect on the target creature.

This device lays a divine charge on its target(s). If the targets are something other than you or another creature (such as an object or area), the spell lays a divine charge on you, the caster. Targets which already have a divine charge present must choose which to keep if the new spell has the same charge type. Only one divine charge can ever be present on a target at a time.

You can purchase this rod at a higher creator level than the minimum required to cast the spell. Doing so increases the potency of the spell as described above, but also increases the cost, as follows:
