Condition Severity: Moderate

   Who's there? Stay back!

Effects

  • While affected by the startled condition, you must make an attack of opportunity every time that anyone, friend or foe, provokes one from you, assuming you have attacks of opportunity available.
  • Roll your normal melee to-hit roll. If you hit, you do not inflict your normal damage. Instead, you inflict 1d6 points of damage per 2 CR's of the monster, trap, or effect that caused you to become startled, rounding down (e.g. if a CR 11 monster caused the startled condition, you would deal 5d6 points of damage). The damage type is the same as the damage type of the weapon or attack you used. If your weapon can deal more than one damage type, the GM chooses.
  • You are still considered an ally of your fellow party members while under this effect.
  • You cannot take full attack actions.
  • This is a fear condition.

Ended By

If the ability, trap, or effect description includes specific directions for how the condition is ended, then that is the primary means of ending this condition. In many cases, it is the only way to end the condition. If nothing is specifically listed for ending the condition, then the following methods can be used to end it, instead:

  • You may make a saving throw at the end of each of your turns, as a free action, to attempt to end the Startled condition. The DC for this saving throw is the same DC as the original effect. If successful, the Startled condition ends.
  • If not cleared, Startled automatically ends at the end of the encounter.
