The Ancient Northern Provinces

In times past, the Empire has been much larger than it is today. These additional territories are now lost, since they lie north of the Ironback mountains, but in the official records of the Empire they still exist as parts of the Celegian territories and the Empire has never renounced it's claim to those lands. This claim is the driving reason behind Chronun's vigorous movement into the North. In the records of the Empire there are five geographical regions in the northlands, organized into fifty-five provinces. The total land area in the north is actualy larger than the land to the south, but the Empire has never heavily populated the north as it does the south. The Empire has driven its borders north of the Ironbacks at least twelve times in it's long history, but has never been able to retain it's grip on the incredibly remote lands of the North. The most distant of the ancient provinces, either Fermel of the Far Provinces or Al-Qad of the Crescent Provinces, lay more than twenty thousand miles from the capital, measured along the roads. Of course, the advent of the gate system has erased most of that distance, so the Empire is eager to re-conquer the land north of the Ironbacks and place it beneath proper guidance. In preparation of this anticipated conquest, the Empire has been releasing the most current maps it possesses of the North, made shortly before the Nightmare Wars tore the Empire asunder. On those maps, the provinces go as follows.

  • The Verdant Provinces: Ened, Rumas, Gersten, Pecklos, Blythe, Rept, Forane, Mara, Turl, Moog, Nessa, Carle, and Arane.
  • The Far Provinces: Pinea, Larain, Lassa, Tosh, Ba, Daza, Kooba, Blain, Fermel, Lesa, Kandel, Desalt, Firrea, and Lopek.
  • The Fount Provinces: Vulk, Ferule, Bereafia, Matra, Telean, and Afranc.
  • The Appending Provinces: Dariu, Cilis, Talbot, Erb, Fellaisa, Ulrea, Symis, Kuype, Dalt, and Balm.
  • The Crescent Provinces: Al-Qad, Sostop, Tyrrania, Purg, Calasp, Papar, Deeste, Cokal, Jelre, Tyrmantle, Frynne, and Clarune.

The old information about these lands indicate they were sparsely settled compared to the south and were immensely rich in natural resources. The land south of the Ironbacks has been thoroughly mined and quarried, so that most deposits are completely exhausted and the Empire gains most of it's metal needs from scrapmetal and Wolframith trees. The north, although it has been inhabited for many thousands of years, has not been heavily mined, and the metal starved Empire is eager for the materials and resources which must surely lie there.
