| colspan="11" align="left" | A chain shirt is more accurately described as a chainmail breastplate.  It consists of a shirt of padded armor over which is a multiply-linked chainmail shirt which covers the entire torso.  Chainmail is made of thousands of interwoven rings of iron, brass, or other readily-worked, high-strength, inexpensive metal.  The main cost of chainmail is in the labor used to put it together.  A chain shirt is remarkably heavy for its size, but the strength and flexibility give it a very good level of protection for a 'light' armor.
