Determine Spells Castable Per Day
Determine Spells Castable Per Day
Once you have chosen which spells you 'know', you now need to determine how many spells you can cast each day, and exactly which spells, from among those you know, you will be able to cast.  This isn't always the same.

Memorize Spells
<div style="margin-left:1.5em">
Alchemist - Extracts Preparable Per Day
* Alchemists must prepare their extracts in advance each day, and they can only prepare a limited number.  As a result, they must choose from among the extracts they know which extracts they anticipate they will need in the coming day, and prepare them.  Alchemists cannot wait until the need arises and then choose which extract they want for that specific need.  They have to plan ahead. Preparing extracts is done as part of the alchemist's Full Night's Rest, and can only be done at that time.

* If an alchemist wants to use the same extract more than once in a day, they must prepare it more than once, using up the appropriate number of extract "slots" to do so.

* First level alchemists can only prepare a single 1st-level extract per day + a number of additional 1st level extracts based on their Intelligence score, as described in Table: Bonus Spell Slots Per Day.

* Upon using an extract that the alchemist has prepared, it is expended for the day, and it cannot be used again until the alchemist prepares another one, during their next Full Night's Rest.

* The number of extracts the alchemist can prepare each day increases as they gain levels in the alchemist class. Refer to their class page for details.

Bard - Spells Castable Per Day
* Bards are Spontaneous Casters, meaning that they can choose to cast any spell they know at the time they decide to cast a spell.  They do not need to memorize spells in advance, or limit their selection in any way.

* At first level, bards can cast an infinite number of 0th-level spells (cantrips) each day (limited only by the time required to actually cast them), and a base of just one 1st level spell each day.  However, if the bard has a high enough Charisma score, they may gain bonus 1st level spells they can cast each day, added to this base value.  See Table: Bonus Spell Slots Per Day for details.

* Each time the bard casts a spell, they use up a spell slot of the spell level appropriate to the spell they are casting.  Once spell slots are expended for the day, they cannot be used again until the bard's next Full Night's Rest.

* Even though a wizard can only memorize a limited number of cantrips each day, they can cast any of those cantrips an unlimited number of times; casting the cantrip does not expend its memorized state.  The only limitation on how often a cantrip can be cast per day is the amount of time required to cast it (eventually, you'll run out of daytime).

* The number of spells the bard can cast each day increases as they gain levels in the bard class.  Refer to their class page for details.

* If a bard knows any Metamagic Feats, and wishes to apply the effects of one or more of these feats to any of their spells, they can simply add them on at the time they cast the spell.  Since applying a metamagic feat increases the spell level of the spell, the bard must expend the higher level spell slot to accommodate the modified spell.  See Using Metamagic Feats for details. (Low level bards probably don't need to worry about this; it only becomes relevant when the bard has access to spell levels greater than 1st).

Cleric - Spells Castable Per Day
* Even though clerics know every 0th and 1st-level spell in the Cleric spell list at 1st level, they aren't able to spontaneously choose which spell to cast at will.  Instead, they must prepare a limited number of these spells each morning as part of their Full Night's Rest, and they can only cast from among their prepared spells.

* If a cleric wants to cast the same spell more than once in a day, they must prepare it more than once, using up the appropriate number of spell "slots" to do so.

* At first level, clerics can only prepare three 0th level spells (orisons) and two 1st-level cleric spells.  However, with a high enough Wisdom score, clerics may receive one or more bonus spell "slots" that add to these base numbers.  See Table: Bonus Spell Slots Per Day for details.

* If a cleric knows any Metamagic Feats, and wishes to apply the effects of one or more of these feats to any of their spells, they must do so at the time that they prepare their spells.  They cannot wait until they are casting the spell to do so.  Since applying a metamagic feat increases the spell level of the spell, the cleric must designate the higher level spell slot to accommodate the modified spell.  See Using Metamagic Feats for details. (1st level clerics probably don't need to worry about this; it only becomes relevant when the cleric has access to spell levels greater than 1st).

* Upon casting a spell that the cleric has prepared, it is expended for the day, and cannot be cast again until it is once again prepared during the cleric's next Full Night's Rest.

* Even though a cleric can only prepare a limited number of orisons each day, they can cast any of those orisons an unlimited number of times; casting the orison does not expend its prepared state.  The only limitation on how often an orison can be cast per day is the amount of time required to cast it (eventually, you'll run out of daytime).

* The number of spells the cleric can prepare each day increases as they gain levels in the cleric class.  Refer to their class page for details.

* The exception to casting only from the Cleric's prepared list of spells is healing spells.  Any spell with the word "Cure" or "Inflict" in their names (e.g. Cure Light Wounds) may be cast spontaneously by sacrificing a prepared spell of the same spell level.  As a result, clerics do not need to ever prepare any Cure or Inflict spells during their daily preparation ritual.  They can decide, in the heat of the moment, to forego casting one of their prepared spells to cast one of the Cure or Inflict spells in its place, as the need arises.  This gives the cleric a great deal of flexibility, both with regards to their ability to apply healing when it is needed, and in their ability to prepare a broader range of spells each day.

Druid - Spells Castable Per Day
* Even though druids know every 0th and 1st-level spell in the Druid spell list at 1st level, they aren't able to spontaneously choose which spell to cast at will.  Instead, they must prepare a limited number of these spells each morning as part of their Full Night's Rest, and they can only cast from among their prepared spells.

* If a druid wants to cast the same spell more than once in a day, they must prepare it more than once, using up the appropriate number of spell "slots" to do so.

* At first level, druids can only prepare three 0th-level spells (orisons) and one 1st-level druid spell.  However, with a high enough Wisdom score, druids may receive one or more bonus spells that add to these base numbers.  See Table: Bonus Spell Slots Per Day for details.

* If a druid knows any Metamagic Feats, and wishes to apply the effects of one or more of these feats to any of their spells, they must do so at the time that they prepare their spells.  They cannot wait until they are casting the spell to do so.  Since applying a metamagic feat increases the spell level of the spell, the druid must designate the higher level spell slot to accommodate the modified spell.  See Using Metamagic Feats for details. (1st level druids probably don't need to worry about this; it only becomes relevant when the druid has access to spell levels greater than 1st).

* Upon casting a spell that the druid has prepared, it is expended for the day, and cannot be cast again until it is once again prepared during the druid's next Full Night's Rest.

* Even though a druid can only prepare a limited number of orisons each day, they can cast any of those orisons an unlimited number of times; casting the orison does not expend its prepared state.  The only limitation on how often an orison can be cast per day is the amount of time required to cast it (eventually, you'll run out of daytime).

* The number of spells the druid can prepare each day increases as they gain levels in the druid class.  Refer to their class page for details.

* The exceptions to casting only from the Druid's prepared list of spells are Wild Shape and Summoning spells.  A "Wild Shape" spell is any spell with "Wild Shape" in its name (e.g. Wild Shape I (Druid Spell), and a "Summon Monster" spell is any spell with "Summon Monster" in its name (e.g. Summon Monster I (Druid Spell)). These spells may be cast spontaneously by sacrificing a prepared spell of the same spell level.  As a result, druids do not need to ever prepare any Wild Shape or Summon Monster spells during their daily spell preparation.  They can decide, in the heat of the moment, to forego casting one of their prepared spells to cast one of the Wild Shape or Summon Monster spells in its place, as the need arises.  This gives the druid a great deal of flexibility, both with regards to their ability to use Wild Shape or Summon Monster spells when needed, and in their ability to prepare a broader range of spells each day.

Paladin - Spells Castable Per Day
* Even though paladins know every 1st-level spell in the Paladin spell list at 3rd level, they aren't able to spontaneously choose which spell to cast at will.  Instead, they must prepare a limited number of these spells each morning as part of their Full Night's Rest, and they can only cast from among their prepared spells.

* If a paladin wants to cast the same spell more than once in a day, they must prepare it more than once, using up the appropriate number of spell "slots" to do so.

* At third level, paladins can only prepare a single 1st-level paladin spell.  However, with a high enough Charisma score, paladins may receive one or more bonus spell "slots" that add to these base numbers.  See Table: Bonus Spell Slots Per Day for details.

* If a paladin knows any Metamagic Feats, and wishes to apply the effects of one or more of these feats to any of their spells, they must do so at the time that they prepare their spells.  They cannot wait until they are casting the spell to do so.  Since applying a metamagic feat increases the spell level of the spell, the paladin must designate the higher level spell slot to accommodate the modified spell.  See Using Metamagic Feats for details. (Low level paladins probably don't need to worry about this; it only becomes relevant when the paladin has access to spell levels greater than 1st).

* Upon casting a spell that the paladin has prepared, it is expended for the day, and cannot be cast again until it is once again prepared during the paladin's next Full Night's Rest.

* The number of spells the paladin can prepare each day increases as they gain levels in the paladin class.  Refer to their class page for details.

Ranger - Poultices Brewable Per Day
* Rangers must prepare their poultices in advance each day, and they can only prepare a limited number.  As a result, they must choose from among the poultices they know which poultices they anticipate they will need in the coming day, and prepare them.  Rangers cannot wait until the need arises and then choose which poultice they want for that specific need.  They have to plan ahead.  Brewing poultices is done as part of the ranger's Full Night's Rest, and can only be done at that time.

* If a ranger wants to use the same poultice more than once in a day, they must brew it more than once, using up the appropriate number of extract "slots" to do so.

* At second level, rangers can only prepare a single 1st-level ranger poultice from among those they know.  However, with a high enough Wisdom score, rangers may receive one or more bonus spell "slots" that add to these base numbers.  See Table: Bonus Spell Slots Per Day for details.

* Upon using a poultice that the ranger has brewed, it is expended for the day, and cannot be used again until it is once again brewed during the ranger's next Full Night's Rest.

* The number of poultices the ranger can prepare each day increases as they gain levels in the ranger class. Refer to their class page for details.

Sorcerer - Spells Castable Per Day
* Sorcerers are Spontaneous Casters, meaning that they can choose to cast any spell they know at the time they decide to cast a spell.  They do not need to memorize spells in advance, or limit their selection in any way.

* At first level, sorcerers can cast an infinite number of 0th-level spells (cantrips) each day (limited only by the time required to actually cast them), and a base of just two 1st level spells each day.  However, if the sorcerer has a high enough Charisma score, they may gain bonus 1st level spells they can cast each day, added to this base value.  See Table: Bonus Spell Slots Per Day for details.

* Each time the sorcerer casts a spell, they use up a spell slot of the spell level appropriate to the spell they are casting.  Once spell slots are expended for the day, they cannot be used again until the sorcerer's next Full Night's Rest.

* The number of spells the sorcerer can cast each day increases as they gain levels in the sorcerer class. Refer to their class page for details.

* If a sorcerer knows any Metamagic Feats, and wishes to apply the effects of one or more of these feats to any of their spells, they can simply add them on at the time they cast the spell.  Since applying a metamagic feat increases the spell level of the spell, the sorcerer must expend the higher level spell slot to accommodate the modified spell.  See Using Metamagic Feats for details. (Low level sorcerers probably don't need to worry about this; it only becomes relevant when the sorcerer has access to spell levels greater than 1st).

Wizard - Spells Castable Per Day
* In addition to only knowing a limited number of spells from the wizard's spell list, wizards must also select from among those spells a limited number of spells they wish to cast each day. They aren't able to spontaneously choose which spell to cast at the time they decide to cast something.  Instead, they must memorize a set of spells from among those they know each morning as part of their Full Night's Rest, and they can only cast from among their memorized spells during that day.

* If a wizard wants to cast the same spell more than once in a day, they must prepare it more than once, using up the appropriate number of spell "slots" to do so.

* At first level, wizards can only memorize four 0th level spells (cantrips) and one 1st-level wizard spell.  However, with a high enough Intelligence score, wizards may receive one or more bonus spell "slots" that add to these base numbers.  See Table: Bonus Spell Slots Per Day for details.

* Upon casting a spell that the wizard has memorized, it is expended for the day, and cannot be cast again until it is once again memorized during the wizard's next Full Night's Rest.

* If a wizard knows any Metamagic Feats, and wishes to apply the effects of one or more of these feats to any of their spells, they must do so at the time that they prepare their spells.  They cannot wait until they are casting the spell to do so.  Since applying a metamagic feat increases the spell level of the spell, the wizard must designate the higher level spell slot to accommodate the modified spell.  See Using Metamagic Feats for details. (low level wizards probably don't need to worry about this; it only becomes relevant when the wizard has access to spell levels greater than 1st).

* The number of spells the wizard can memorize each day increases as they gain levels in the wizard class.  Refer to their class page for details.

The spells castable per day for all classes can be reset to their base values by taking a Full Night's Rest, and doing so also restores any bonus slots provided by having a high caster ability score. Unused spell slots from previous days cannot be saved up and used later. Any spell slots that the character fails to use before the end of their next full night's rest, or before 24 hours pass (whichever comes first), are lost.
