Inferno Rod

CL 3 Magic Rod • Weak Evocation
Cost: 4,500 gp
Weight: 4 lbs.

This rod is comprised of several metals, each in a different shade of red, orange, or yellow, blended and twisted together to give the impression of fire. The rod's shape also looks like a jet of flames, with eddies, whorls, and licks of flame interrupting its surface throughout. The top of the rod is quite pointy from this effect (although not really enough to allow it to perform piercing damage), while the base of the rod is decorated with a large yellow gemstone, appearing as the hottest part of the flame.

Wielders of this rod can utter a command word as a standard action to cast a Burning Arc spell, using up one charge from the rod.

When activated, the rod creates a gout of flame that leaps from the tip, burning an enemy nearby, then leaping from that enemy to a second, a third, etc. depending on the creator level of the rod. The rod affects a 20-foot cone area (a 4x4 square area that begins from an edge or corner of the wielder's space), and targets 1 enemy within that cone. For every 10 creator levels of the rod (dropping fractions), one additional creature within the cone's area can also be targeted. That is, two targets within the area at creator level 10, 3 targets at creator level 20, and 4 targets at creator level 30.

Affected targets suffer an amount of fire (energy, common) damage based on the creator level of the rod (see below).

Each target can attempt a Reflex saving throw with a DC based on the creator level of the rod for half damage. The wielder may choose targets as they like, but all targets must be within the cone area of effect at least partially, and no target can be struck more than once. The wielder may choose to affect fewer targets than the maximum if they wish.

If a targeted creature has spell resistance, the wielder of the rod must first make a Bailiwick skill check against the target's Maneuver Defense. If they equal or exceed this number, the spell is resolved against the target as normal. If the check fails, the spell is cast from the rod (using up a charge) but has no effect on the target creature.

You can purchase this rod at a higher creator level than the minimum required to cast the spell. Doing so increases the potency of the spell as described above, but also increases the cost, as follows:
