Unlike most skills, every retry after the first retry gains a +1 to the roll for every failed previous re-try after the first.  This simulates the fact that as you grind away at a problem you gain more and more information about what is ISN'T, and you can eventually solve almost any solvable problem.  The maximum 'retry bonus' you can build up to is +10, at which point you are going cross-eyed from the strain of the problem and are likely to quit or collapse in exhaustion.
