Rod of Smithing

Rod of Smithing

CL 1 Magic Rod • Weak Transmutation
Cost: 500 gp
Weight: 4 lbs.

This rod is in the shape of large, massively made blacksmith's tongs, with heavy, complex jaws. When activated they glow red and emit a faint echoing clang, like a far-distant blow on an anvil.

Wielders of this rod can utter a command word as a standard action to cast a Scoop spell, using up one charge from the rod.

When activated, this rod forges into existence a small vessel of force anywhere within 25 feet to which there is line of sight and line of effect. This vessel remains active as long as the wielder concentrates on a task involving the vessel. This is typically long enough to complete a skill challenge, or a full days work, or until you begin a full night's rest. As a move action, the wielder can direct the container up to 15 feet per round in any direction, though the spell ends if the distance between the rod and the container ever exceeds the spell's range. You can dip the container to pick up or drop a liquid as a move action. The vessel holds up to 1 pint of liquid or small objects, weighing up to 5 pounds per creator level of the rod. The vessel cannot ever hold, move, or effect any living thing, and cannot be used to make fine manipulation skill checks at a distance. No, you cannot pick a lock with a rod of smithing. You can also gather up a pint of liquid or small objects spread across a surface with 1 minute of careful concentration. The ability to hold and move five pounds or more of white-hot metal (or any other object or liquid) is useful in many instances, and creative wielders have come up with innumerable uses for these devices. Higher level rods can handle more weight and are more difficult to dispel, which may or may not be important to your application.

You can purchase this rod at a higher creator level than the minimum required to cast the spell. Doing so increases the potency of the spell as described above, but also increases the cost, as follows:
