Security Rod

CL 1 Magic Rod • Weak Abjuration
Cost: 750 gp
Weight: 4 lbs.

This rod is heavy iron bolt, including a massive clasp. The clasp is usually open. When the command is spoken the rod locks itself closed with a palpable rush of power.

Wielders of this rod can utter a command word as a standard action to cast an Alarm spell, using up one charge from the rod.

When activated, this rod creates a subtle ward on an area 9 x 9 x 9 squares that originates from a square the wielder selects within 30 feet of their space to which they have line of sight and line of effect. Once the spell effect is in place, until the end of the wielders next full night's rest, it sounds a mental or audible alarm each time a creature of Tiny or larger size enters the warded area or touches it. A creature that speaks the password (determined by the wielder at the time of casting) does not set off the Alarm. The wielder decides at the time of casting whether the Alarm will be mental or audible in nature.
  • Mental Alarm: A mental Alarm alerts the wielder (and only the wielder) so long as they remain within spell range of the warded area. You note a single mental "ping" that awakens you from normal sleep but does not otherwise disturb concentration. Magical silence does not interfere with the mental alarm's ability to alert the wielder.
  • Audible Alarm: An audible Alarm produces the sound of a hand bell, and anyone within 60 feet of the warded area can hear it clearly. Reduce the distance by 10 feet for each interposing closed door and by 20 feet for each substantial interposing wall. Magical silence can block an audible alarm.
In quiet conditions, the ringing can be heard faintly as far as 180 feet away. The sound lasts for 1 round.
Creatures affected by Cloistered, Displaced, Exiled, or Fogged do not trigger the Alarm. Likewise, Ethereal or Astral creatures do not trigger the Alarm, though Invisible creatures do.
In addition, one time during any encounter that occurs after having triggered the Alarm, the wielder of the rod may choose one creature within the encounter, and inflict bludgeoning (physical, common) damage as defined on the table below to that unfortunate, as well as inflict the Quelled condition on that creature, as a swift action. If a Reflex saving throw save is made against the DC listed for the rod's creator level, the damage in halved, but the Quelled condition is not affected.

You can purchase this rod at a higher creator level than the minimum required to cast the spell. Doing so increases the potency of the spell as described above, but also increases the cost, as follows:
