Spellguard Bracers +9

CL 36 Wrists Slot Item • Overwhelming Abjuration
Cost: 52,200,000 gp
Weight: 2 lbs.
Family: Spellguard Bracers

Spellguard Bracers are a highly artful, finely made set of bracers, obviously meant to be a defensive item, but also made with a lot more panache than many such items. When worn by an attuned caster, they seem like a bit of a dud. They don't really seem to do anything cool or nice, especially if worn by the sort of spell caster who lets the meat shields take care of all the 'dumb work' in the front ranks.

However. If the wearer is ever forced into direct threat, then the mighty abilities of the Spellguard Bracers kick into action. If a caster tries to cast a spell while threatened, they must make a defensive casting check to get their magics off without losing the spell. A Spellguard Bracer, a certain number of times in a given time frame, simply negates the need to even try the check! The wearer automatically succeeds on such checks, without even trying. Even better, the magical power then infuses the wearer and allows them to blithely dodge any and all attacks much better than their usual wont while the caster moves to safety.

The most powerful bracers even lend their might to spells that the wearer Mana Burns while threatened. When threatened, you can destroy those fools who dared invade your personal space with extreme prejudice! The wearer of Spellguard Bracers may find themselves actually seeking out hazardous situations, just for the heady rush of invincible might the item grants. This is a seductive, dangerous power indeed, if it can lure a Worker of The Arts into such foolishness!

Note: This item only triggers on spell casting actions that use a Standard Action or greater. In the case of these bracers, a spell casting action includes the use of items such as rods or potions, as long as they are producing a spell, or spell-like effect. Lastly, note that you can never mana burn any spell or spell effect gained from an item. The classic example is drinking a potion. The Spellguard Bracers would trigger on the standard action necessary to drink the potion, allowing the potion to be consumed without attacks of opportunity and giving extra armor class, but it will not allow a potion (or any item, really) to be mana burned. Trying to expend multiple potions to mana burn a potion, or multiple charges to mana burn a rod, does not work, in any instance. Good thinking, but sorry, no.

A set of Spellguard Bracers +9 grants the attuned wearer protection when they are caught up in the swirl of threatening combat. Unless the wearer attempts to cast a spell while threatened, these Bracers do nothing.

When you attempt to cast a spell while threatened, up to once per round, as a free action, the wearer may choose to succeed on the caster check automatically. There is no need to even roll, success (and only success) is guaranteed.

Even more potently, once this power is activated, the magic of the Bracers infuses the wearer and allows them to dodge attacks more gracefully for a short time. Until the start of the wearer's next turn, they receive a +5 Dodge bonus to their AC.

Finally, and perhaps best, the spell you cast safely is empowered by the Bracer's ineffable power. This empowerment is small, and not noticeable in many cases, but if the wearer uses mana burning with this spell, the magic of the Bracer adds one or more free Circles. If the wearer expends two extra spell slots upon the spell, then the boost adds one (1) bonus Circle to the effects of the mana burn. If the wearer expends three extra spell slots upon the spell, then the boost adds two (2) bonus Circles. If the wearer expends four or more extra spell slots upon the spell, then the boost adds three (3) bonus Circles. Note that this bonus Circle or Circles will not cause the spell to exceed the limits the caster can cast, but even such a modest boost can have...profound impact on the power of the spell.

The owner of this magic item must wear it continuously for 24 hours to attune it to their aura, and until that time has passed, it provides no benefits to the wearer.
