Condition Severity: Moderate

Effects

  • Staggered occurs when a player-character is reduced to exactly 0 hit points.
  • Staggered does not apply to monsters, since they are slain when they reach 0 or fewer hit points. If a monster needs to remain alive for plot reasons, being reduced to exactly 0 hit points knocks the creature Unconscious.
  • A staggered creature may take a single move action or standard action each round (but not both, nor can he take full-round actions). A staggered creature can still take free, swift, and immediate actions. A creature at exactly zero hit points or with nonlethal damage exactly equal to its current hit points gains the staggered condition.
  • In general, very few creatures are capable of inflicting the staggered condition as a special attack (though all of them can do it, eventually, through damage). As a special ability, it is only ever found in effects such as Vorpal weapons, or those few creatures who can inflict vorpal-like wounds with their attacks. (Use with caution!)

Ended By

If the ability, trap, or effect description includes specific directions for how the condition is ended, then that is the primary means of ending this condition. In many cases, it is the only way to end the condition. If nothing is specifically listed for ending the condition, then the following methods can be used to end it, instead:

  • Any healing received which increases hit points to a positive amount ends the Staggered condition.
  • Staggered does not end automatically at the end of the encounter.
