Back to Monster Patterns and Roles

'Swollen Zombie' is a pattern that can be added to any Zombie, hereafter referred to as the base creature.

A Swollen Zombie uses all of the base creature's statistics and abilities except as noted below.

CR

Same as base creature +1.

Size and Type

The Swollen Zombie's Size increases by one category. Its Type does not change.

Initiative Modifier

The creature's initiative modifier increases by half the amount that its CR increases, round up.

Senses

No changes.

Armor Class

Swollen Zombies gain +2 AC. This is granted by adding to the base creatures natural armor bonus.

Hit Dice

No changes.

Defensive Ability

Aside from what is written above and below, a Swollen Zombie gains no special defensive abilities.

Speed

A Swollen Zombie's base speed improves by ten feet in all movement categories it has.

Melee Attacks

A Swollen Zombie retains all the base creature's attacks, and its weapon and armor proficiencies. The monster receives a +2 untyped bonus to-hit with all attacks. A Swollen Zombie adds 1d6 of negative energy damage to all its melee attacks.

Damage

The base damage of all attacks does not change.

Space and Reach

A Swollen Zombie increases by one size category, usually from Medium to Large, and it adds 5 feet to its reach with all melee attacks.

Offensive Ability

  • Gut-Burst. When a Swollen Zombie is destroyed, its distended form explodes horribly, inflicting 1d4 per two CR's (round up) of negative energy damage to all creatures within its reach. There is no saving throw against this damage.

Ability Scores

No changes.

Maneuver Offense and Maneuver Defense

No changes.

Feats

If it did not have it already, a Swollen Zombie gains Combat Reflexes, meaning it can make up to four attacks of opportunity each round.

Skills

No changes.
