is the 'Silent Black' actually necessary? Isn't it either the Astral Sea or the Outer Madness? Does it add anything useful to our cosmology?

If we keep the Silent Black, does it open up the possibility that material planes which slide off the font could slide into the Astral Sea instead of inevitably sliding into the Outer Madness? Is there more than one fate for a dying material plane? Could it end up in both places?
