Deathwatch Monocle +4

CL 18 Eyes Slot Item • Moderate Necromancy
Cost: 108,000 gp
Weight: 1 lbs.
Family: Deathwatch Monocle

A Deathwatch Monocle is a subtle device that fits over one eye, with a lens over that eye. When being used, the lens turns completely opaque, with a single baleful spark in the depths which peers forth in watchful awareness.

Deathwatch Monocles can be innocently made, of conventional gold and glass, or can have nearly any appearance desired by the maker, ranging from the practical to the fanciful, from a highly decorative butterfly or bat wings, insect-themes, nigh-mask-like designs with skullcaps to massive hoops of beaten iron cocked down over one eye with bubbled and flawed black diamond lenses. No matter their appearance, they always turn the lens black when used, with a single dire spark peering forth without favor or mercy. At the upper end, Deathwatch Monocles can appear as floating crystals in a gyre of darkness attached to the wearer's head, humming vortices of destruction, shimmering portals filled with eyes, and many others besides.

A deathwatch monocle +5 grants its wearer the following abilities:
  • Deathwatch: As part of a move action, the wearer may learn the exact current hit points (including temp, bonus, or any other hit points) of a creature they can perceive. This ability persists until the creature's hit points change (either due to damage sustained, or healing received), the creature is slain, or the creature breaks line of sight from the wearer.
  • Sense Stillness: As part of the same action to activate the Deathwatch ability, the wearer can attempt to discern whether the target is real or fake. If the target is an illusion, this ability grants the wearer an immediate saving throw to disbelieve the illusion representing that creature. The DC of this save is the same as that used by the illusion in the first place. Furthermore, if the save is failed, the wearer may re-attempt it up to once per round, starting the following round, as long as they still know the hit points of the target. If the illusion did not allow any saving throw, this ability has no effect (and the illusion is not exposed as a fake to the wearer).
  • Deathsense: While the wearer knows their target's hit points, the wearer gains Blindsense against that creature. In addition, up to once per encounter, if the wearer critically hits the target that is under the effects of this ability, all damage inflicted by the critical hit, except for bonus or precision damage, is maximized.
  • Deathgaze: While the wearer knows the hit points of a target creature, they may use the monocle to make a ranged touch attack as a standard action against that creature. The range for this attack is one hundred feet. Each day, the wearer may inflict a total number of hit points of negative (energy, uncommon) energy damage equal to their Base Attack Bonus (BAB) times their character level. This damage may be allocated any way they desire, from one point to all remaining points, in up to three attacks per day. The amount of damage must be declared before the attack roll, and if it misses, the points are still expended for the day.

The owner of this magic item must wear it continuously for 24 hours to attune it to their aura, and until that time has passed, it provides no benefits to the wearer.

Creation: Creator (Feat), Bailiwick Check (DC 46 (10 + double CL)), Bright (tier 3) remnant, An item symbolic of the enchantment, 54,000 gp (minus cost of symbolic item).
