A paralyzed character is frozen in place and unable to move or act. A paralyzed character has effective Dexterity and Strength scores of 0 and is helpless, but can take purely mental actions. A winged creature flying in the air at the time that it becomes paralyzed cannot flap its wings and falls. A paralyzed swimmer can't swim and may drown. A creature can move through a space occupied by a paralyzed creature—ally or not. Each square occupied by a paralyzed creature, however, counts as rough terrain.
| Ended-By = As a full round action, you may attempt to resist the Paralyzed effect, gaining a new saving throw. The DC for this saving throw is the same DC as the original effect. If successful, the Paralyzed condition degrades to the [[Immobilized]] condition.

As a full-round action, an enemy can use a melee weapon to deliver a coup de grace to a paralyzed foe. An enemy can also use a bow or crossbow, provided he is adjacent to the target. The attacker automatically hits and scores a critical hit. (A rogue also gets his sneak attack damage bonus against a helpless foe when delivering a coup de grace.) If the defender survives, he must make a Fortitude save (DC 10 + damage dealt) or die. Delivering a coup de grace provokes attacks of opportunity.

Creatures that are immune to critical hits do not take critical damage, nor do they need to make Fortitude saves to avoid being killed by a coup de grace.

Condition Severity: Strong


   Your whole body becomes rigid and frozen in place, making you unable to move or act.

Effects

  • You can take no actions, other than those described in the "Ended-By" section below.
  • You are susceptible to coup-de-grace attacks.
  • A winged creature flying in the air at the time that it becomes paralyzed cannot flap its wings and falls.
  • A paralyzed swimmer can't swim and may drown.
  • A creature can move through a space occupied by a paralyzed creature without squeezing, whether friend or foe, as though the space were difficult terrain.

Ended By

If the ability, trap, or effect description includes specific directions for how the condition is ended, then that is the primary means of ending this condition. In many cases, it is the only way to end the condition. If nothing is specifically listed for ending the condition, then the following methods can be used to end it, instead:

  • As a full round action, you may attempt to resist the Paralyzed effect, gaining a new saving throw. The DC for this saving throw is the same DC as the original effect. If successful, the Paralyzed condition degrades to the Immobilized condition.
  • You can spend a full round action to attempt an Escape Artist check against the Maneuver Defense of the creature who inflicted this status. If there is no creature involved, the target is a challenging DC based on the CR of the effect. If you succeed on the check, you shrug off the condition.
